When teaching adult EFL classes, I mix certain very common idioms into teaching materials right from the beginning, in part because many people find them interesting and in part because I find that understanding idioms provides learners with an outsized confidence boost (and, in my opinion, the mental/emotional/confidence aspect of language learning is fundamental). They are far from being a focus, however.
